Environment Agency To Integrate Carbon Emission Reducing VPO Technology

Further to a trial in 8 of their buildings, the Environment Agency will install Voltage Power Optimisation technology in a further 33 of its buildings in a bid to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions. The trial resulted in a saving of between 10%-18% of the buildings’ electricity consumption, which is the equivalent of 281 tonnes of carbon.

Voltage Power Optimisation (VPO) works by reducing the voltage of the incoming electricity to reduce energy wastage. Most appliances work fine at 200 volts, however the voltage of electricity entering our homes is usually between 207 and 253 volts. This additional electricity is often wasted as heat, therefore by reducing the voltage, considerable savings in electricity consumption and, as a result, carbon emissions and energy bills can be achieved.

The integration of the VPO technology should pay for itself within 3-4 years, as it is expected the increase in the buildings’ energy efficiency will help to reduce the organisation’s carbon footprint by between 700 and 900 tonnes of carbon every year, which equates to a £160,000 to £200,000 reduction in electricity bills.

Director of Resources at the Environment Agency, Graham Ledward, said,

“The UK has a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050. This is a difficult but vital task if we are to prevent severe climate change. However, improved environmental performance does not have to mean increased costs. In fact, good environmental performance makes business sense because it can cut costs.”

In addition to installing this cutting edge new technology, the Environment Agency has also implemented other initiatives and programmes to help reduce the organisation’s environmental impact. These include targeting the number of business miles employees travel, cutting water consumption and relocating the head office to the UK’s greenest office building.
