A hairdresser from Shropshire has put down his scissors and comb and picked up a bucket and shovel. Derick Eggerton from Pickstock near Newport is showing his Gloucester Old Spot pigs at the Newport show on 14th July.
On his smallholding, Mr Eggerton began his pig empire, founding a rare breeds company to raise and sell meat from rare breed pigs. He started off by completing a small holders course at agricultural college, Harper Adams University College and now has over sixty Gloucester Old Spots just three years later, but still gets a cut from his hairdressing business with his salon in Newport, Capability Brown.
Derick is very proud of his pigs, saying,
“They are all absolutely gorgeous and the babies are so sweet.”
It’s a litter of piglets that he’s hoping will steal the show and get him a rosette. Derick likens the character of his pigs to dogs, recognising him at meal times and enjoying the attention of a good ear scratching.
If you’d like to see Derick’s brood of piglets competing in the Newport Show, it is taking place at Chetwynd Deer Park on 14th July, and tickets can be obtained on the booking line – 0845 467 1889.
