A revolutionary new product from organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology company, LOMOX, based in St Asaph, North Wales, could replace the light bulb. OLEDs provide a low energy light source that can be used as part of flat panel displays and provide low energy lighting solutions, and LOMOX’s latest innovation could revolutionise interior lighting, integrating OLEDs into wallpaper.
The benefits of LOMOX’s OLEDs is that they require very little energy to run making them energy efficient and a cost effective option as they will not be costly to manufacture. The technology used in LOMOX OLEDs means that unlike other OLEDs, the oxidation defect that renders other OLEDs less effective is not an issue, giving LOMOX’s product a longer lifespan too. Efficiency is achieved by emitting light along a single axis in the LED, reducing wasted energy, and the light given off is more natural as a result.
LOMOX have been working with the Carbon Trust, an independent company set up by the UK Government in 2001 in order to offer advice and funding to help UK businesses and the public sector reduce their carbon footprints in turn helping achieve Britain’s carbon reduction targets. LOMOX’s Chief Executive, Ken Lacey, said,
“Lighting using LOMOX OLED technology consume significantly less energy and emits less CO2 than conventional lights. We are pleased to be working with the Carbon Trust to develop this “Green” technology.”
The Carbon Trust is currently seeking companies looking to develop other green technologies through its Applied Research scheme that can help cut carbon and be successful in the commercial market. The scheme has already benefited 164 projects by contributing funding of a total of £23 million. The latest bid for applications is open until 18th February 2010 and applications can be submitted via the Carbon Trust website.
