Every hour of every day this week, Queen’s University Student Radio will be defying Climate Change cynic and Environment Minister for Northern Ireland, Sammy Wilson, by broadcasting Act On CO2 adverts following the ban he imposed last week.
In addition, students at the University have challenged Mr Wilson to take part in a public debate about the issue, which is causing controversial discussions about the minister’s suitability within the Department of Environment Northern Ireland.
Despite these adverts having been broadcast on television and radio over the past year, Mr Wilson made the decision to ban what he considers to be “green propaganda”. The Environment Minister’s personal beliefs are that Climate Change is not caused by human activity, but by the Earth’s natural cycle, and therefore does not consider them fit to be aired.
Friends of the Earth and the Green Party have since become involved in the debate, and called for Mr Wilson’s resignation; Friends of the Earth calling his action “completely irresponsible”. The SDLP (Social Democratic and Labour Party) have also put forward that the Environment Minister rethinks his decision to uphold the ban.
