Get On Your Bike For Bike To Work Week

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

bike to work weekAcross America and Canada people are being urged to join in with the spirit of Bike to Work Week from 11th-17th May. May is widely recognised as the month of cycling across America, but this week long event hopes to go the extra mile and inspire more people to get on their bikes and get to work by pedal power.

The aim of Bike to Work week is to encourage people to use a bike as an alternative method of getting to work, rather than relying on fossil fuel powered cars to get from A to B every day, and across different towns and cities, different initiatives and individual events will be taking place, including Celebration Stations throughout Prince George, B.C.

Presteigne Hosts Annual Electric Bike Rally

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

This weekend will see Presteigne in Powys play host to the annual electric bike rally, and event the organisers have said,

“If you own an electric bike or are interested in electric bikes or are thinking of buying a bike, there is no better place on earth to be than in Presteigne on the 9th, 10th of May.”

Despite its name, however, the event isn’t just for hard-core electric bike enthusiasts. The electric bike rally is also about promoting sustainable transportation as an alternative to fossil fuel hungry cars. Last year’s rally was a successful event, but organisers are expecting this year’s event to be even bigger and better, with a variety of different things going on through the day to keep visitors busy and engaged.

Biofuels Come Under Scrutiny In Friends Of The Earth Research

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

April 2008 saw the government declare that a small percentage of biofuels would be added to the make-up of petrol and diesel in the UK. However, revealed in a research paper released by Friends of the Earth yesterday, the biofuels may be contributing up to twice the amount of CO2 as the fossil fuels they have replaced in the fuel mix.

The extra CO2 emitted by the biofuels has been estimated at roughly 1.3 million tonnes or the equivalent of putting an extra half a million cars on the UK’s roads. The CO2 calculations are being made on how much rainforest is being destroyed to make way for the growth of biofuel crops to supply the UK. The biofuel crops are not as efficient at removing CO2 from the atmosphere as virgin rainforest, resulting in a net increase in CO2.

Brown’s Electric Cars May Not Be The Answer

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Gordon Brown has answered the pleas of many by pledging to make next month’s Budget a greener budget in an attempt to try and draw Britain out of the recession and bring the economy back on track. One of the ways he is planning to achieve this is through greener transportation in the city, in the form of electric cars.

Proposed measures to tackle the struggling economy include Brown offering incentives for makers of environmentally friendly vehicles, and also trials of electric cars and the installation of a network of charging points to support this proposed development. (more…)

An Insight Into the Prius’ New Rival

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

With the launch of Honda’s new hybrid car, the Insight, the Toyota Prius now has some competition in the greener car market. The Insight, which Honda name as ‘A hybrid for everyone’, comes in cheaper than the Prius which has been ‘the’ hybrid car for the past ten years, but it’s £18k price tag has left it sadly outside the budget of many people. Honda’s hybrid makes the option available to more people, with prices starting from £15,490.

So what do you get for your money? Well apart from the standard hybrid features that the Prius has, an 8-year or 100,000 mile warranty on its hybrid components to put people’s minds at rest who haven’t ventured into this area of technology before, excellent fuel economy, having the ability to comfortably hit 60mpg, although the official stats boast 62.4mpg and emissions are low at 101g of CO2 emitted per km travelled. The added bonus of no congestion charges to pay if frequenting central London, and for the rest of us, only £15 road tax, make it easier to see what could make this car extremely attractive as an alternative to the Prius.

However not everybody can afford a brand new car, and if they can, even this will be out of the league of many. There is a lot more choice of economic vehicles about than there used to be, such as VW’s blue motion Polo and Golf which offer 74.3 and 62.8mpg respectively, and the Polo only emits 99g/km of CO2. And of course, although not the answer for everyone, the only carbon emissions from a bike are from the breath of the rider…

Heathrow Loses The Plot

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

A current campaign by environmental activist group Greenpeace has seen them purchase a plot of land lying across the area where development is planned to take place to extend Heathrow Airport.

The ‘Airplot’ campaign aims to stop the expansion through the proposed building of the third runway at the airport, action which Friends of the Earth have also commented on, stating that the expansion “is a hammer blow for UK climate targets that will shatter Gordon Brown’s international reputation on the environment”.

The campaign already has the backing of impersonator Alistair McGowan and actress Emma Thompson, among others, and Greenpeace is urging the public to join the campaign to help prevent Heathrow being able to claim the title of ‘biggest carbon footprint in the UK’.

The planning process for the project is likely to go on for years, and Greenpeace advises that there are many stages along the way for people to get involved with and do their bit to try and veto the development. To read more about the campaign, visit the Greenpeace website.
